Opele: Element of Divination

Posted on 11 November 2015 by Babalawo Aworeni

20151111_222823

Opele is one of the elements used to cast an Ifa reading. Orunmila detected Opele by using Ikin Ifa (oke
iponri) to cast the reading, and he is also the one who guides Orunmila on his way. Orunmila woke up in the morning and cast the reading the Odu that came out was Ejiogbe.

Ifa said that when he gets to the market to buy some items, that he should first put money on something he does not want to buy. When Orunmila got to the market he looked around for the items he wanted to buy, then he remembered the reading he made. He encountered one slave (Irere) who had a limp leg and was handicap.

Orunmila put moneyon the slave. Orunmila originally used Opele as a housekeeper and to clear the bush. Until one day clients who came to visitOrunmila noticed Opele working outside, before they reached Orunmila , Opele started speaking their problems.

Orunmila discovered Opele had knowledge, Opele was once a human being. Orunmila loved himand treated him as he did his own children. Opele stayed in the house and divined for Orunmila’s visitors, but Opele started speaking ill of Orunmila.
Orunmila’s clients and the people started saying that Orunmila didn’t have power, that Opele had more powerthan Orunmila. One day when Orunmila was traveling, Opele was called to the Olofin’s palace to divine. WhileOpele was at the palace he committed a major offense.

When Orunmila returned to the town, Olofin invitedOrunmila to the palace, and he explained all that Opele had done. Orunmila was very angry, and he begged Olofin forgiveness for Opele’s offense. Orunmila did another reading for Olofin, and did a sacrifice for him.
When Orunmila returned back home he called Opele. Opele started to insult Orunmila, so he took the iroke and knocked Opele on the head. Opele broke into eight pieces . Orunmila didn’t want to throw Opele away, so hejoined the pieces together and used him to consult. He has five elements. They are Bone (egun), Cowries (owo eyo), Stone (okuta), Broken plate (awo ti o fo), Snail button (be bere igbin). The five elements of Opele stand for two options:   Ire (good) and Ibi (bad)20151111_222222

Ibo idi Opele

You have to feed Opele, but there is a specific way to feed it. You can feed it during and when you feed Ifa, but you can’t put it on top of Ifa because it is a slave (eru ki ba olu a mi gun opo). You can feed it anytime you want. There are many different types of Opele:Egbere, Agbigba, Akargba ect… Although Opele tells the truth, Ikin is more accurate. Therefore Ikin is used for more important consultations, like initiations.

Isedaye Omo Tuntun/The Birth of a New Baby

Posted on 03 January 2015 by Babalawo Aworeni

IMG_114992789995596

Isedaye Omo Tuntun/The Birth of a New Baby. The spirit of a child comes from Heaven. It is important to ask Ifa at every stage of a person’s life, for instance before one gets married or during the birth of a new baby. The reading for the baby occurs when a baby is born and is very important so that the parents will know the type of child they have. Some children come from heaven with a spirit that doesn’t like noise, or may have a delicate constitution, if this is the case, Ifa advises us on how to be a better parent to these types of children. The first reading of the baby is for the child’s destiny, it is a private matter, usually performed between just the parents and the priest. This is because certain taboos or perceived weakness of the child is not for everyone to hear. Sometimes it will be at the parent’s discretion as to whether or not to tell the child. When the child is older it may be prudent to tell them more about their destiny.

When Ifa tells us the child’s destiny, he may say that the child should be initiated or maybe they shouldn’t eat certain foods, or possibly there is a sickness and a sacrifice should be made. This is for the child’s future and what they are destined to become. Ifa will also tell about the name of the child. Ifa’s name for the child will help the child fulfill their destiny. During the naming ceremony it should be performed in the morning and is when the name is given. The other names of the baby other than the family name should reflect the nature of the pregnancy and the actual birth of the baby.

20140527_160407

With regards to the placenta, how it comes out with the baby has a specific meaning also if a child is breach this has a specific name. The tradition surrounding pregnancy, birth, the vital 7 days after the birth and throughout childhood is sacred and there are many rituals surrounding these stages. The rituals involve the first bath of the child, the behavior of the caregiver at birth, what is done with the materials after the first bath, what is done with the placenta, etc.

The Oro Idile, comes from the family compound, where for the first 7-8 days after the birth the mother can only eat certain foods or must exclude certain foods/spices. This too, determines the life of the child. Many times if a parent hasn’t performed the Oro Idile for the child, the child may have a problem later in life or fall sick. The parents may think at that time that someone is attacking them through their child, but that is not the case, the problem originated within the first 7-8 days after the baby was born. Oro Idile is family/compound specific.

Ifa tells us how to be good parents. When the child becomes an adult the parents will disclose the destiny according to what Ifa said to them as a baby and they will take this information into adulthood. The child will know how to conduct themselves in the world, the clothes they should wear, colors they should avoid, taboo foods, etc.

In the Yoruba tradition the people that have children have the world. It is a vital part of the Ifa religion. Every Orisa has many children. According to the source of Ifa in Ile-Ife, a man and woman are to marry and have children. Homosexual relationships are taboo. If a woman is barren this is a different matter.

In this Odu Ifa, Ogbe Osa  Ifa talks about when the people of Ilu Obirin town practiced homosexuality and Olodumare sent Orumila. Orunmila went to war in the town of Ilu Obirin to destroy the town. The town was inhabited by only women and they were brought back to Ile-Ife and taught how to properly conduct their life.

Happy New Year in the Gregorian Calendar, Ifa will bless and keep us in this new year.

Ebo won ki oru Orubo O seun

Ifa says that this year will be filled with success for Ifa practitioners.  We should always dress well in this new year and practice good hygiene.

Ifa talks about meeting an older woman that we should not betray.  We should not betray anybody in this year.  The blessing or gift that you didn’t expect will come in this year from a stranger or someone that you don’t know.

3) Edi gbemi

    Edi somi ,

   Orisa gbemi lakete

Gori Esin lo A difa fun

Olofin otaja taju AyeE loruko aya re je

Ifa says we should be careful of females, do not investigate the practice of women so that our eyes will not go blind.  A husband should not follow or lie to his wife, he should also not stay away from home for too long.  The woman that is looking for a child in this year will find it.

Our Ifa shrines must be neat in this year.  We must make a sacrifice for the victory.  When success comes our way in this year we must make the sacrifice because those around us will be jealous.  We must make the sacrifice that our enemies cannot steal our blessings.  Do not follow the stranger.  We need to feed Osun in this Odu, she will assist the female when she needs to escape danger.

4) Edi gbegberetigbe

   A difun Sango awili awala

  Omo arigba ota segun

Won ko rubo ki owo le je ti e

There is a lot of disease that will come out in this year.  we must make the sacrifice so that we will not have disease.

image

General

We need to be careful about underestimating any person.  We also should use plantain to feed Ifa.  Ifa says that if you have 2 wives or work with multiple people don’t gossip about the word one person says to you.  Don’t repeat what they say and use the information to get a reaction, this will end badly.

Ifa says that if you are in one position, you should not leave that position to seek something better.  You should stay where you are.

Ifa says that we should not say bad things about our work.  We should not say negative or strong words to children.  Let the words that come from your mouth be positive and good.  Always keep your house neat.  Blessing will enter a neat and clean house.

Ifa says that we should feed Ogun, Obatala, Ifa and Sango.

Arisun Idana Ile Aafin 2014

Posted on 03 June 2014 by Babalawo Aworeni

The Arisun Idana Ile Aafin festival was held on Monday, June 02, 2014 in Ile-Ife. In this festival, the Araba and the elder the Awos must pick the Ewe (leaf) at the Osara Shrine and use it to wash the Ikin and Odu of Oduduwa. These are the Ikin held by the Ooni of Ife.

At night all the Awos and the Chiefs in Ile-Ife, including Lowa, Jaran, and Omirin (Emese) sleep in the palace. In the early morning they feed the Ikin and the Odu of Oduduwa. Also in the morning the Awos will go to Oketase and continue to say iwure over the Ikin and Odu Oduduwa.

image

image

Before the procession to the Osara Shrine in the afternoon the elder chiefs met at Oketase.

image

image

Following the meeting, the precession began down the streets in the center of Ile-Ife towards the Osara Shrine.

image

The elder Awos and chiefs continued to the Osara Shrine to pick the Ewe while the rest of the precession and the Ojugbona stopped at the Origi in the Moniki compound. The younger Awos and Ojugbona of Oketase fed the Origi. They said many prayers, recited Odu Ifa, sang and danced.

image

image

image

The precession through the streets ended at the Ooni’s Palace.

That evening the Awos returned to the Ooni’s Palace to feed and pray over the Ikin and Odu of Orunmila.

The singing and dancing of the elder Awos continued throughout the night

The Awo’s stayed in the Ooni’s Palace all night celebrating and chanting adura until the early morning.

Orunmila historically helped Oduduwa feed his Ikin and Odu. During this festival the Araba Agbaye as the representative of Orunmila on Earth helps the Ooni to feed the Ikin and Odu logboje of Oduduwa.

This festival refers to the Egbodo Ooni, which must be performed for the New Year to be ushered in. The Ooni must eat a spiritual yam for the sacrifice to be complete. Five days following the Egbodo Ooni and feeding of Oduduwa’s Ikin and Odu, the Orunmila Babarami Agboniregun festival will take place the Oketase Ile Ifa Agbaye .

Odun Agbon Osara and Olokun Festival 2014

Posted on 06 May 2014 by Babalawo Aworeni

This festival is the celebration of Osa and Olokun.  The odu Ifa that talks about this festival is Osa Meji.  It was divined for Olokun and Osa. Osa and Olokun are the wives of Oduduwa. During this time only Olokun had money Osa was very poor.   Olokun is the first wife of Oduduwa and did not have any children. Because of her childlessness she advised Oduduwa to marry another wife. This second wife is Osa.

imageBoth Osa and Olokun were told to make the sacrifice. Only Osa made the sacrifice. Osa was the only one to have children and Olokun remained  childless.

image

During this festival the king calls all his children to wear Agbon and celebrate.  Only Osa had the children and Olokun did not have the children to dance in the festival.

10325712_556433501135870_7772726180529888778_n

They sing:

olomo loni laye

osara mo ko omode

o oye ye ko oyeko.

imageBecause Olokun didn’t have children she was sad and went to the sea.  THis is why she left Ile-Ife and went to Eko and changed to the ocean.  In the end Orunmila made an extraordinarily large sacrifice for her to have children and at last she had children.

image

The Agbon festival is celebrated every year and this year was enjoyed and attend by the Araba Agbaye, his children, all the Awos, the Emese, Osara people and their children.

imageOrishada would like to thank all who  attended this year’s Agbon festival and we look forward to next year’s festivities.

Osetura Agbara Obirin : The power of the woman

Posted on 22 March 2014 by Babalawo Aworeni

photo(4)Osetura Agbara Obirin: The power of the woman

Osetura is the odu that is called when making a sacrifice. If it isn’t called the ebo will not be effective.  The only way an ebo can be effective and be received by Olodumare is for the incantation for Osetura to be called.

The odu Osetura also speaks about the power of women.  It says that if they aren’t given honor and respect then they can anger and they have the ability to destroy the world.

If a woman wants to capture the power from a man, she can use 201 tricks that are intrinsic to all females then they can use an additional 50 tricks after which the man’s power will be theirs if they desire it.

The lives of all males are in the hand of the female.  If a husband is to succeed let us look to his wife.  The success of the family is in the hand for the woman.

We have to give females respect and honor whenever a sacrifice is made.  If any female enter during the time when the sacrifice is being made, then it is said that they the sacrifice has been accepted.  This is because Olodumare empowers women and it is good for men to give full respect for women.

This odu teaches us that we should not use our eyes to under value a woman or any person.  All the Irunmole know the power that Olodumare gave to Osun and she has great ability to fight them.  In the end they all give her great respect.

Akere finu sogbon

Ni oruko ti an pe ifa iran

Ija gidigidi ko kan agba

Eniti olorun ba pe ni lagba

Baba la ma pe

Adifa fun osetura ti o ma ti kere

Gba agba lowo olodunmerinlogun

This is divined for all Igba Irumole Oju Kotun and divined for Igba Irunmole Oju Kosi, when they came from the heaven to this earth.

When they got to earth and they began building their house but they refused to build a house for Osun because they thought her to be a simple female.

Osun watched carefully how the Irunmole treated her.  This was the way they began building the world.  However she knew that if they were to know peace or to succeed in the world, in the end they would have to beg her and give her the ultimate respect.

As time progressed, the earth changed for the worse and all the people that Orunmila said would survive, died and the people he said should die, survived.

Ogun is the one who produces the iron, when he want to manufacture iron, all made wasn’t any good.

Obatala is the one who make the artists, and at this time all artist he made turned out bad.

The earth turned into a place of disaster and the Irunmole went back to Olodumare.  They explained all that happened on the earth.

And Olodumare use his mirror to check the world and he saw that Osun was under the tree.  Olodumare asked the Irunmole what became of the female that he sent with them to earth was.  They answered that she was a simple and ordinary female.  Olodumare told them they have to go back to the earth and build the house for her and give her the honor and respect.

When they got back to this earth, they built a house for her and Osun refused to sleep there because they didn’t build it for her in the beginning.  Then all the Irunmole decided that they we would sleep in the same house.

Osun is a beautiful woman all of Irunmole wanted to be with her but they didn’t know how.

Orunmila has a lot knowledge and he used his knowledge to speak a secret incantation.  Nobody understood what he saying to the iroko and he put the words to Osun’s chest.  This is how he was able to have his way with her.

When Osun woke up in the morning she saw that her clothes were wet and she called all the Orisa and asked them who had sex with her nobody answered.

Osun took out the Edun Ara, pulled her power and called the incantation that said whomever had sex with her the Arira should kill that person.  Thunder entered Orunmila’s house.

Orunmila took  his Oke Ponri Re o Gbe o and made a reading.  Then he used the Sigidi, called on his power using his power, and began to recite a powerful incantation, which said that Sigidi should kill Osun.

Osun listened to the words that Orunmila spoke and she asked him if he was the one who had sex with her and he answered her in the affirmative.

Osun asked why he didn’t tell her and he asked her to please calm down, so he could explain.

The two of them reconciled, married and became husband and wife.

Nine months later Osun delivered a baby boy and they names the baby, Omo Ti Osun Tu Wa.

When the baby grew up, Orunmila asked Osun to have another baby, but she refused.  She only wanted to have one child for Orunmila.

Osun said that if any babalawo want to make any ritual or sacrifice and if they don’t called the name of my child, Osun Tu Wa or Osetura the ritual or sacrifice we not be effective.

If a babalawo wants to make the (ebo) sacrifice he has to called Osetura to the sacrifice before it can accepted by Olodumare.

This is odu lets us know the powerful of females.

Agbara Oro Enu : The Power of the Word

Posted on 05 August 2013 by Babalawo Aworeni

100_0670

Agbara Oro Enu: The Power of the Word

Oro Enu (The Word) is very power and we have to be careful before speaking. It is the Word that created this world, and it is the Word that can destroy it.A good Word can lead us to success and a bad Word can lead to our downfall.

We can use Oro Enu to become rich and that same rich person can become poor because of Oro Enu.

There are many Odu that speak about Oro Enu:

Etura Obara/ Etura Arawara

Fi enu mo enu

Fi ete mo ete

A difa fun iwofa alaba to

Fe lori oku gbigbe lori igi obi

Ifa ni gbogbo ti oju ba ri

Ni enu ma so.

This verse, Ifa tells us that it is important to remember that all that the eyes see, the mouth cannot say. If the mouth fails to heed this warning, problems will manifest for the mouth. When the mouth says all of what the eyes see then the mouth will tear like a cloth.

If people don’t use caution they can find themselves in a very bad place. In another odu, Eturupon Meji/Ologbona Meji

Ifa says:

Enu roro paro

Enu roro sa e

Enu mujemuje Nibiti otito ku s

i This Odu tells us that not all that the mouth says is the truth because words can be used to trick people by lying and deceiving. One can also use words to show honor or dishonor.

The word a is like an egg, if it falls it is not possible to restore it to its original state. The Word that people say will not die maybe they are good words or maybe they are bad words. However, the Word that has been said will be remembered and it will continue to be remembered long after the person who has said it, is long gone.

Let us always use good words so that people will always remember us from our good words.

Ifa says in another verse,

Irete Ogunda/Irete Ariya

Oro rere ni yobi lapo

Oro buburu niyo ida nu apo

A difa fun ako ariya

Alukin fun abo ariya

This verse tells us to have good words in our mouth; it is good words that bring kola nuts out of the pocket. It is bad words that take the sword out of the scabbard. If we say good words all the time it will bring us blessings, honor and respect. However bad words give us disgrace, dishonor and death.

If you want to do anything in this world you must use words. If someone is looking for work regardless of their credentials, they must speak in an interview. If you want a wife or husband is it through the communication that people come together. If there is a problem with the law it is through words that the case is made in your favor or not.

To become a leader it is through the word. When a leader uses good words then they will have loyal followers. Because of the good word a leader may be successful.

People use words to protect themselves from danger. We can also use word to fight without using any weapon or medicine. At the job or office or in politics they use words to fight each other, they use words to send people to jail and words can also cause sickness in the body.

Ofun Okanran/ Ofun Ran Ekun

Ifa se ko awo omode

Igede dun mo awo agbalagba

Babalawo to ko ifa ti ko ko

Igede ko ma ranti ojo kan pa san

A difa fun wale elu abi somo ni igede ekiti

In this odu, Ifa tells us that when you want to go and learn Ifa you have to learn Ifa Ijugbe Word not Agabamirara word. Ifa Ijugbe Word are good and peaceful words. But Agabamirara word are strong, fighting words.

This odu Ifa says that it is important to learn both the good word and the strong word. One must use them to together but one cannot let the bad outweigh the good. It is important to remember that even if it isone day of fighting and one day of war nothing is taken away from the battlefield, it is the words that persists. It is only the word that will be said out and it will continue. It is the word that will eventually take you from danger.

We use the word to call Spirit. Whether it is Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, it is through the word that the spirit is called. We use the word to bind the spirit to medicine that is to heal or harm. Be mindful of the words you use, for it is our most powerful asset.

The odu Ifa for this year is Eturupon Irosun (Eturupon sokun, Eturupon sode) – IRE GBOGBO

1) Eturupon sokun , eturupon sode, eturupon mogelemogele adifa fun agba agba ife kiribitti ni ojo ogun aro ka aaye de won ki won rubo won rubo won seun

Ifa is telling us in this year that we need to make the sacrifice so that we will not see war.  There is much trouble coming to the world in this year and the Ifa practitioner is well advised and has the tools available to handle the upcoming turmoil.

2) Eturupon sokun , eturupon sode, eturupon mogelemogele adifa fun Ejire to bo sode isa laye

There will many ibeji (twins) in this year and there will be pregnancies for the women that have been barren.

If a spouse is a twin then the other should take very good care of that spouse in this year.  Husband and wife need to care for each other and help themselves in times of prosperity and  hardship.

General

One should also not ask for money in this year, and be forgiving of those that owe things to you, in this way we will also see blessing in this year.  A sacrifice should be made to Esu to ensure that things that are owed to you will come.

We should use akara to feed our head.  Ifa says we should feed our head to receive the blessing in this year.  One needs to use their head to avoid trouble.

Also, under this odu, one should feed Osun because of the blessing.  There is the possibility for the Ifa practitioner to become wealthy in this year through the blessing of Osun.  One needs to be careful about arguments in this year, we should not engage in fighting.

There is a lot of blessings in this year.  Feed your Orisha at home to see the Ire Gbogbo.  Make the necessary sacrifices and follow the warnings of Ifa.
